Books 38 and 39

Tales of Beetle the Bard by JK Rowling
Genre: Children's
Pages: 111

B&N Synopsis

Fans of Harry Potter will already have a few associations with the title of this book by J. K. Rowling. The first is that The Tales of Beedle the Bard is Dumbledore's bequest to Hermione Granger in the last book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The book is a collection of Grimm-like fairy tales wizarding parents tell their children that both amuse and instruct -- or at least keep the listeners occupied. The second is that originally Rowling produced only seven copies, each one lettered and illustrated by herself, with gorgeous jewel-encrusted leather bindings. Six were intended as thank-you gifts to friends who had supported her through the series. The seventh, inset with moonstones, was put up for auction by Sotheby's and bought by Amazon for $4 million. Tantalizing tidbits have come out, but now we all get to read the five stories ourselves: "The Fountain of Fair Fortune," "The Wizard and the Hopping Pot," "Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump," "The Warlock's Hairy Heart," and the story that proved so important in Deathly Hallows, "The Tale of the Three Brothers."

Cary Grant
Genre: Entertainment
Pages: 192

B&N Synopsis

He's the most self-invented man in movies, this side of Charlie Chaplin. Like Chapin, Cary Grant grew up poor, trained as an acrobat, and brims with confidence, romance, and a spirit of merry larceny--he just has a better tailor. His impeccable timing and light, cat burglar's touch at stealing women's hearts were perfect for the jaunty heroics and romantic farce of such classic films as An Affair to Remember, Notorious, His Girl Friday, North By Northwest, Bringing Up Baby, and To Catch a Thief. In the end, the role became the man--he had ceased to play "Cary Grant" and simply was Cary Grant. One could wish no man any greater happiness than that. The Hollywood Icon series: People talk about Hollywood glamour, about studios that had more stars than there are in heaven, about actors who weren't actors but were icons. Other people talk about these things, Taschen shows you. Hollywood Icons is a series of photo books that feature the most famous movie icons in the history of cinema. These 192-page books are visual biographies of the stars. For each title, series editor Paul Duncan has painstaking selected approximately 150 high quality enigmatic and sumptuous portraits, colorful posters and lobby cards, rare film stills, and previously unpublished candid photos showing the stars as they really are. These images are accompanied by concise introductory essays by leading film writers; each book also includes a chronology, a filmography, and a bibliography, and is peppered with apposite quotes from the movies and from life.

"That Sunday, I was faced by a philosophical dilemma: I had chosen to respect the institution rather than the words on which that institution was based.

I'm getting old now, and God could take me at any time. I've remained faithful to my religion and believe that, for all its errors, it really is trying to put things right. This will take decades, possibly centuries, but one day, all that will matter is love and Christ's words: 'Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.' I've devoted my entire life to the priesthood and I don't regret my decision for one second. However, there are times, like that Sunday, when, although I didn't doubt my faith, I did doubt men.

I know now what happened to Athena, and I wonder: Did it all start there, or was it already in her soul? I think of the many Athenas and Lukases in the world who are divorced and because of that can no longer receive the sacrament of the Eucharist; all they can do is contemplate the suffering, crucified Christ and listen to his words, words that are not always in accord with the laws of the Vatican.

[...]

I like to imagine that, when she left the church, Athena met Jesus. Weeping and confused, she would have thrown herself into his arms, asking him to explain why she was being excluded just because of a piece of paper she'd signed, something of no importance on the spiritual plane, and which was of interest only to registry offices and the tax man.

And, looking at Athena, Jesus might have replied:

'My child, I've been excluded too. It's a very long time since they've allowed me in there.'"

Cages clashing?

Sorry in advance for the text only post.
I'll be moving out of residence early next year and into an appartment with some friends. I'm already planning out the room (similar to my residence room, lots of pink and silver). The worry is that I'm going to be getting some pet rats and I don't know what to do about caging them. I'm very particular about having a room that looks sleek and clean and I feel like most cages kind of ruin this image.
Does anyone have any suggestions of examples of types of cage set ups / ways to itegrate cages neatly into a room? I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks.

Living room - work in progress

Living room shot 5

I've always been working towards posting here, but due to budgetary constraints and lack of inherent sauciness in my previous abodes, I've always felt a bit constrained - I wanted to leave off on posting until things really were up to both my standards and the standards of the community.
Luckily, having moved into a fairly beautiful flat with great bones, I've been able to put together a bit more awesomeness. My house will be ready for a tour soon - I'm still working on the finishing touches for my bedroom and the bathroom - but I had my living room looking almost right, posted some pictures to the Open Sauce thread and got encouragement from [info]silly_narziss to make a separate post.
In that thread I was bemoaning the lack of a coffee table (since that was the #1 thing precluding me from feeling like it was just about right). Today, on wandering into the Salvation Army since I hadn't been thrifting for a while, I found a cute little retro table for $10! So with that boost in mind, I cleaned and organised the living room so I could take a few more shots and make a full post as a preview of things to come.

I like red, thrift stores and mid-century stylings... )

Bachelor Apartment

Hello, my name's Liz. I'm 20 years old and live in Manitoba, Canada, in a bachelor apartment that's about 270 sq ft(?). The main room is a disaster right now (there was a bed bug scare in the building, and two building-wide fumigations which required packing all your stuff up. both times I had no bed bugs! :D). I've been living here for a little over a year, and I'm still trying to downisize (I'm down to the sentimental and school stuff, ugh).

I also want a bit of advice on what to do with my kitchen. its so.. plain, and I just never got around to doing anything special with it. I like red accents in kitchens. I was thinking maybe some art, and some curtains, but I'm not sure what sort of theme I want :P

I wouldn't mind more art or photos in the bathroom, but I'm kind of worried about water damage from the humidity. I keep my bathroom well ventilated though.

For both the kitchen and bathroom, I HATE the tile floors. They look perma-dirty, no matter how often I wash them. I've kind of made peace with them, but they still look gross :(

Here we go! )

Thanks for looking!

50. Fallen by David Maine

Title: Fallen
Author: David Maine
Year: 2005
# of Pages: 244
Date read: 10/12/2009
Rating: 4*/5 = great

Description:

"Once expelled from the Garden, Eve and Adam have to find their way past recriminations and bitterness to construct a new life together in a harsh land. But the challenges are many for the world's first family. Among their children are Abel and Cain, and soon the adults must discover how to be parents to one son who is everything they could hope for and another who is sullen, difficult, and rife with insecurities and jealousies. In the background, always, is the incomprehensibility of God's motives as He watches over their faltering attempts to build a life. In Fallen, David Maine has drawn a convincing, wryly observant, and enthralling portrait of a family -- one driven (and riven) by passions, jealousies, irrationality, and love. The result is an intimate, in-depth story of brothers, a husband, anda wife -- people whose struggles are both completely familiar and yet utterly original." -- from the inside flap

My thoughts:

This was a compelling story about Cain, Abel, Adam, Eve and the rest of the family. I liked how the story went backwards in time starting with Cain's imminent death and ending with Adam and Eve leaving the Garden of Eden. I also liked how David Maine stretched out the story line so that Cain's offering being rejected isn't followed immediately by his murdering Abel.

That was when I cut my arms with a razor blade as a means of creative expression. I only did it lightly, just grazing the skin, to see the way the blood would bleed out, to make myself look tougher. Not like some of those kids who keep going deeper and deeper, wondering what they look like down to the bone, because it's a world that's so close and yet so far and so dangerous and so much their own. The only world that is their own.

Happy Thanksgiving. A toast:

Let us toast to animal pleasures, to escapism, to rain on the roof and instant coffee, to unemployment insurance and library cards, to absinthe and good-hearted landlords, to music and warm bodies and contraceptives... and to the "good life", whatever it is and wherever it happens to be.
